Recorded on January 26 and February 10, 1961 at Nola Penthouse Studio in New York City.
Philip Wells Woods (1931 - 2015) studied music with Lennie Tristano at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Julliard School. In the early 1950s, Woods began to lead his own bands. Quincy Jones invited him to accompany Dizzy Gillespie on a world tour.
This Phil Woods and other members of the Quincy Jones band recording was such a major success that it is surprising that he has rarely recorded in this context. Rights of Swing is a Phil Woods' five-part suite, a reference to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. The colourful arrangements use the distinctive horns in inventive fashion and the music, which leaves room for many concise solos, holds one's interest throughout.
The "golden age" of recordings was from 1955 to 1965, at the beginning of the LP and the stereo era, where pure vacuum tube amplification helped produce recordings demonstrating unparalleled fidelity and warmth, lifelike presence and illumination.
This Pure Pleasure LP was re-mastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London, using pure analogue components only, from the original analogue studio tapes through to the cutting head and was pressed at Pallas, Germany.
