The Concert Jazz Band is the first album released by this extraordinary Mulligan big band formation.

While Gerry Mulligan has received honors, awards, recognition commensurate with his genius, other members of the CJB have not received the same. Conte Candoli (brother of Henry Mancini's band, Pete Candoli) is a terrific trumpeter and leads a strong section. Bob Brookmeyer, playing a valve trombone instead of the typical slide version, anchors a versatile trombone section. Zoot Sims would be competitive with any saxaphonist of his era. Oddly for a large band, there is no piano but it isn't missed.

The "golden age" of recordings was from 1955 to 1965, at the beginning of the LP and the stereo era, where pure vacuum tube amplification helped produce recordings demonstrating unparalleled fidelity and warmth, lifelike presence and illumination.
