Recorded on September 1, 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey

Pianist Sonny Clark started his career acknowledging Bud Powell as his primary musical role model but by the mid-1950s he had his own unmistakable style. Sonny Clark set the standard for hard bop musicians by mastering the bebop vocabulary while at the same time combining a fearless and forward looking style with back to the roots gospel and blues influences. Sonny's Crib, which has the remarkable front line of Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller and John Coltrane, features, as one would expect, inspired solos with Byrd, 'Trane and Clark all in top form. "News For Lulu" (decades later recorded by John Zorn) and an up-tempo "With A Song In My Heart" are among the many gems heard on this classic date; a definitive hard bop session that sounds fresh, lively and vital a half-century later.

Like all Music Matters Jazz releases, this audiophile vinyl reissue is remastered by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at Acoustech from the original analogue Van Gelder studio tapes and pressed on 180g virgin vinyl at RTI in Camarillo, CA. The highest quality gatefold cover features original session photography on the inside.
