Recorded on February 18 and May 17, 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

1965 was one of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations that were full of passion and fury. Just two months after recording A Love Supreme, Trane began recording an album of outside material heard here on The John Coltrane Quartet Plays. Features the classic quartet's stirring versions of the standards "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Nature Boy" along with the Coltrane originals "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise."

This Analogue Productions LP was remastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray at AcousTech, using pure analogue components only, from the original analogue studio tapes through to the cutting head and was pressed on virgin vinyl at RTI.
